Aaron Espinoza takes us back and gives us his take with a classic review of Socom U.S Navy Seals Fire Team Bravo 2 for the Sony Playstation Portable (PSP).
Socom has been around for quite sometime now, ever since the days of the PS2. Socom has now furthered on to the PSP. Much like Socom’s tiny child to take on the go.
In Socom U.S. Navy Seals Fire Team Bravo 2, nothing really has changed from its original series that came from the PS2. So most people will feel right at home when playing.
The Basics:
A standard 3rd person shooter. Much like in the old games, choose your partner and equip him or you with any weapons of your choice. Do various missions, complete the mission by completing small task such as blowing up something, taking out enemies, or finding civilians and saving them. Fire Team Bravo 2 isn’t really anything new or different.
Modes: Fire Team Bravo 2 has very little modes, most of these modes include…
Campaign:
The “story” of the game. Basic story that almost every war game has, go to the middle east fight your way to getting more info by doing missions. Trying to finish the war (which doesn’t happen in any games today) and your done. What else can you expect from a war game now a days?
Ad Hoc Mode:
Play a multi-player game with your friends around you. Seals vs. Marines.
Choose whichever mode you feel like play like Death match, search and destroy, the basics.
Infracture Mode:
On-line play. Play with up to 16 players on line and play different modes pending on what mode the host has chosen. The game is headset compatible. If you do not have a headset handy you have two options here, go buy one or use the word chat that practically everyone almost ignores. Either way, your assed out. We suggest you go get yourself a pair of headsets. But don’t let some 13 year old kid talk shit about you (it happens very often for some reason, and not just on line with the PSP but PS3 and 360 as well). We’re pretty sure you wont mind some snotty spoiled kid cursing you and making weird annoying noises over the headset. But you can turn off your mic as well and the game will allow you to hear people even if you don’t have it on. So we suggest you get a mic and curse his spoiled ass out. Do it the GCN way. Shit talk your way through on line multi-player or at least Aaron and Mike’s way.
Gameplay:
Gameplay is much like all 3rd person shooters on the PSP system. You will have your camera angled straight forward and will have to use lock-on in order to shoot your enemy. You may choose to have “free look” on if it can help you get better aim, but you will most likely have lock-on usage instead. The camera angle can be a problem when climbing up hills because of its straight forward default setting which may cause you to get shoo once during play. Shooting is fine, just the fact that you cant tell whether or not if your bullet hit your enemy. So you may find yourself walking up to an enemy and find yourself getting shot by a “dead” person. Although this may be a problem, the gameplay is overall good. Gun fights are generally fun and some missions may just be the right touch. Shooting is easy, its all in the push of the “X” button, movement is basic, and lock-on will make it generally easy to kill enemies. Although the bad camera does get frustrating, it wont take up all your time, heck not even 10 percent of it, just a small portion in which you wish it could have been done better.
Graphics:
The graphics are OK, especially since it is a PSP game. The graphics look that of a PS1 game with slight improvements, so don’t expect a graphic hit here people. The only con we found, is the shooting. When you shoot your gun, you can hardly see your bullets hit the enemy. Which is also the reason why we cannot tell if they are dead. Some enemies decide to lay down which causes them to seem dead, which isn’t the case as you read in the gameplay section. The graphics are rather the lowest part when it comes to Socom Fire Team Bravo 2.
Music and Sounds:
The game features a variety of music. The music is good and matches its game style. The Socom them is done nicely and the gameplay music is good too. Except when it comes to on line play, you feel that the music randomly pops up out of o where which causes you to have a “WTF?” moment. But the tunes do great, they will not be an issue. The sounds of guns blazing is pretty well done and the voice acting is good too. Hearing your partner following commands and responding to
you does good and gives you a better feel of the game.
Multi-player:
Multi-player modes are fun in Socom. There are some good and bad though. Lets start off with the good. When playing on line, you have the voice chat feature, which is a good addition to the on line gameplay. You have various modes to choose from and you can also use your customized character in play. The game modes are fun and easy to play. The bad is that when playing you can die. Your probably saying “this isn’t so bad..” It is in Fire Team Bravo 2. Once you die you have to wait until the round has ended. Another bad thing about it is the lack of graphics in on line play. You cant really tell who your partners is, and you can find yourself teaming up with the wrong sides accidentally.
Features:
The game has quite a few features, you may want to listen to the Jukebox which gives you all the main tunes of the game. You may also choose to watch movies and cut scenes. Another feature you have is the ability to customize your character, but in order to do so, you must earn points through campaign or on line play.
Concept of the Game:
Shoot your way through many levels and maps to complete the objectives and missions! Use stealth or just fire away at your choice!
Playability:
Its easy to play, you may fuss over the controls a bit, but you will get used to them in a 10 minute session of gameplay.
Replay Value:
After beating the game, you may find yourself playing on line most of the time. But it wont be for long, replay is pretty low.
The Good:
-Gameplay is easy
-Sounds are great
-Headset feature for on line use
-Many on line modes to choose from
-Customizing your characters
-Many people to play with on line
-Its only $19.99
The Bad:
-Shooting may be a problem when you cant see the bullet
-Camera angle does get annoying
-Snotty nosed people play on line (Guess it comes with the territory though when you play on line w/chat)
-You cant tell who your enemies were at times
-WTF moments will happen at times when music plays
Overall, it was a pretty good game, because of that Socom US Navy Seals Fire Team Bravo 2 scores a
7.8 out of 10
