Sonic Rivals 2 Review

Sonic and friends are back on the PSP racing against each other to the finish and introducing 3 more new rivals to join the ring bashing fun in the newest installment in the Sonic Rivals series, SONIC RIVALS 2. With all new modes and cards, will Sonic Rivals 2 be as good as the first Sonic Rivals?

Sonic is back to bring racing mayhem with Shadow, Knuckles, Silver, and Metal Sonic! And with three newly added rivals Tails, Espio and Rouge, this will be the biggest race yet

This time around, Sonic Rivals has been taken up a notch. Backbone entertainment has decided to add more voice acting and extra modes to the game. The voice acting does extremely well, especially since we all hate it when we have to read most of the character dialog! Backbone also decided to add 6 modes to the game, which can be a good addition to Sonic Rivals 2, but I will explain these later on in the review.

You have many “rivals” in Sonic Rivals 2, each containing their special signature moves and storyline. Story Mode actually has a pair of characters in each story, such as Sonic and Tails, Shadow and Metal Sonic, Silver and Espio, and Knuckles and Rouge. The story-lines are not anything to get pumped up about. And some may even have story-lines that we have already seen in the past. So it wouldn’t be a surprised to some of you who have played previous Sonic games.

The story-lines are simple, here are a few:

Sonic and Tails: You must uncover the mysterious Chao disappearances.

Shadow and Metal Sonic: When Dr. Eggman calls to shadow for help, he sends Metal Sonic to help out shadow to help out and Find Dr. Eggman.

Silver and Espio: When Espio is on the mission to uncover the mysterious Chao disappearances, Silver asks Espio if he has seen any Chao. Espio follows Silver to see if Silver is the one behind the Chaos disappearances. Apparently Silver needs the Chao to save the world. So Espio helps out silver.

Knuckles and Rouge: Knuckles is yet again on the trial to finding the master emerald after its been stolen, for about the 100th time. Rouge decides to accompany Knuckles and helps him find the Master Emerald.

See, nothing big right? right!

GAMEPLAY

The Gameplay in Sonic Rivals 2 is pretty fast paced. Race your way to the finish and done. But there is more to it, you will have to decide what path is fastest for you. Usually you have more than one path to follow. You can choose to grind, run, or spring your way to the finish! You can also attack your character to slow them down so you can take the lead. There are main boost pads and air boost to take alternative routes. So you will not be going through the same crap over and over again! When your playing, you may come to some obstacles in which you might have to stop, such as mixing and matching items to open a door. But these are simple, but my take a small portion of your lead.

When in playing story mode, you face a small challenge.

After your done, you will face a boss. the order is pretty different, like this:

Act 1 –> Act 2/ challenge –> act 3 –> Boss

There is more than just racing in Sonic Rivals 2. There are 6 modes you can play. The modes you have are:

Knockout: Knock your opponent out when and win a certain amount of rounds in order to advance.

Capture the Chao: Much like capture the flag. Pretty simple, catch the chao and take it to your base.

Lap Race: Race in a circuit style mode, first to complete a certain amount of laps wins.

Ring Battle: Collect as many rings as you can in the time limit, first to have more rings wins!

King of the Hill: No, you will not be watching TV. The way the game is played is you have to stand on top of a goal as long as you can, the person who has the most time in the goal wins.

Tag: Yes, tag. Players must tag their “rivals”. Who ever has been tagged less wins.

6 different modes. My personal favorites are Tag and Battle. So check which one is best for you! Each mode is fun and fast you may get frustrated on Battle, but you’ll have fun with it.

FEATURES

Sonic Rivals does not offer much as far as features. The only features it has are cards and suits.

You may earn cards when beating a race, getting certain ranks, and accomplishing certain challenges. Unlocking certain cards unlocks a certain suit for your character. Suits can be added to make your character look awesome. Unfortunately, you can not mix and match like you were able to in the original Sonic Rivals

MULTI-PLAYER

And thanks to the game sharing mode, you can enjoy these modes in multi-player mode! So have fun with your friends!

In Multi-player mode you can wager cards (only if the other person has a copy of Sonic Rivals 2). You can wager up to 3 cards per game, winner of the game gets the cards.

You can also choose to just trade cards with each other to help your friends unlock a certain suit for your character.

GRAPHICS

The environment in Sonic Rivals 2 look nice and colorful. The raceways are well put and the characters dont look bad either.

The graphics are pretty good, considering its a PSP game. So you will not have a problem when it comes to this.

SOUNDS

The music in the game is pretty much good. You may even have tunes of the music stuck in your head for awhile after you turned off the game. The game does have a theme song with lyrics.

Many of the tunes can sound quite comical in certain zones.

Backbone actually decided to add voice acting, which does good for people who get tired of reading. The voice acting isnt the best, but it still beats reading.

Concept of the Game

Racing your way to the finish line!

Sounds

With voice acting, the game should be better. But then again voice acting isnt so great. But you may enjoy some of the tunes this game has to offer

Replay value

With many alternative routes, and card collecting, you may try to find yourself trying to collect cards and race using alternative routes.

Problems

I encountered a few glitches in the game such as getting stuck in a few spots, and some floating glitch that was kinda cool!

SO….

With awesome platforming and modes, this game has to be a buy for you PSP owners! The modes are a nice addition to the game and with a new set of rivals, you will have no problem choosing what you want! (yours truly is always Sonic!) I just wish they added online gameplay! If they could of done it with Sonic Rush Adventure, I am pretty sure they could of done it with Sonic Rivals 2! With that said…

Sonic Rivals 2 scores:

8 out of 10
